Story

Hope for Turkiye

The Peninsula announced the launch of a global fundraising initiative in 2023, “Hope for Türkiye”, across our hotels for the victims of the Kahramanmaras earthquakes in Türkiye. A total of HK$37.9 million was raised through this campaign, with all proceeds to be donated to a non-profit or governmental organisation that will aid the long-term redevelopment of most affected areas.

Vocational Training

Hospitality skills are personal, transferable and unbound by cultural barriers. They are the optimal tools to strengthen social mobility within all demographics. The Honing Skills in Hospitality programme provides vocational and life-skills training to young adults from ethnic minorities and those of refugee status. Several graduates of the programme have even gone on to work within our properties.

Love of Community

Throughout the global pandemic, the Love of Community initiative leverages our resources in food preparation to support charitable meal donation programmes around the world designed to uplift at-risk individuals within the communities in which we operate. With the collaboration of local charities and food banks, we collectively prepared more than 190,000 cooked meals, ingredient packages, and other dried goods valuing upwards of HK$3.2 million in 2020 and 2021.

Sustainable Partnerships

The journey of sustainability is not travelled alone and we have had the fortune of collaborating with like-minded partners along the way. Partnering with ANTHILL Fabric Gallery, retired towels were upcycled into fashionable earrings and blazers. With Novetex Textiles Limited, retired bed covers were unwound into cotton yarn, allowing it another opportunity at life, and working with the Humane Society International, we are able to launch our group-wide commitment to using cage-free eggs.

Modern Slavery

As an industry involved in diverse supply chains around the world, we have set out an approach to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking in our businesses. All suppliers adhere to our Supplier Code of Conduct, and open dialogue with them allows us to better understand the challenges within each supply chain. Furthermore, our Speak-Up policy promotes transparency in business functions by incentivising colleagues to report concerns and malpractices.

Upcycled Materials

Designed in tandem with Hong Kong designer, Junya Au, this yellow teddy-bear can be transformed into a cosy bathrobe, after a long day of cuddling. The fabric used is from retired bed covers from The Peninsula Hong Kong, and hand-dyed by volunteers at the St. James Settlement using onion skin waste provided by our F&B outlets. Such a project was only possible thanks to our partners’ innovative ideas and commitment to the environment.

Sustainable Financing

In recent years, sustainable investment and financing has become a popular vehicle for financial institutions and capital providers to fund green projects and encourage environmental initiatives. In 2021, we partnered with HSBC and MUFG to secure our first sustainability-linked loan totalling HK$1.25 billion. The proceeds of the loan will be used to generate working capital and corporate funding including sustainability related capital expenditure and initiatives. This represents an important step for us to further integrate sustainability into HSH’s overall business and financing strategy.

Preparing for Low Carbon Future

Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California piloted our group’s first on-site solar farm project. With a total of 1,920 photovoltaic solar panels, the solar farm generates most of the energy for club use. We continue to conduct feasibility studies in our other properties to identify our next renewable project.
